Limited edition ham?

FernleighHamtagWe all know there’s a limit to the number of legs on a pig that will provide good hams, but we really liked the way that Fiona and Nicholas Chambers at Fernleigh Free-Range made their Christmas hams release special (for me, they’re always  special quality). They added a tag that tells buyers how many hams were produced for Christmas 2012. A full-colour, nicely produced tag tells the Fernleigh produce story and makes them individual, a recognition that this is the output from a small producer, not a factory.  It’s an idea that other small producers could take note of.

Fernleigh’s free range, rare breed Wessex Saddlebacks also provide beautiful bacon, which has been recognized by a number of awards. You’ll find a list of their stockists and that Farmers’ Markets that they sell at here, where you can sample a wide range of their fresh meats and smallgoods. They have hams available throughout the year, if you can’t get to a Market, just keep an eye on their website.

Thank you Nicholas and Fiona for the care that went into ham number 30, it was a big hit at our extended family Christmas lunch, and we’re still working our way through it, getting closer to the bone.
